How to Develop Your Mindfulness Habit

Mindfulness was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn. He is a micro-biologist and American Professor who developed Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) in 1979. His purpose for doing so was to aid in physical pain management. Kabat-Zinn was inspired by Buddhism and incorporated some of its principles into his practice. In the Buddhist teachings mindfulness translates to a present moment awareness, with awareness being the linchpin.

Awareness further distills down to remembrance meaning to remember to be considerate of your current or present moment. Kabat-Zinn captures this sense of awareness through mindfulness by teaching and curating mindfulness routines and or rituals. The primary modal for this is meditation. Kabat-Zinn teaches awareness through meditation as a means to vitalize one’s life. MBSR is Kabat-Zinn’s 8 week program that uses meditation to help mitigate pain, stress, and anxiety.
